Timber Structures
George Nakashima-
“Each flitch, each board, each plank can have only one ideal use. The woodworker, applying a thousand skills, must find that ideal use and then shape the wood to realise its true potential”
We collaborate with architects, design professionals and also provide our own design services for timber structures. Architecture is a deeply emotional experience for clients and others, we draw upon our industry leading knowledge, experience and dedication to ensure our architecture invokes an emotive response for our clients and others.
Our approach requires us to consider the land, craft skills, and building science. When we are commissioned to create a structure, the structure becomes a reflection of the client and SVT’s values and ethos, we carefully select the appropriate materials and craft them from tree’s into structures.
Kanawa tsugi (half blind tenoned, dadoed and rabbeted scarf joint.) This is a traditional Japanese joint that we use in our structures, it allows us to join timbers end to end to create long runs in buildings.
We use a variety of timber species for our timber structures with Oak, Douglas fir, Lawson cypress being a few examples. Timber species can be discussed more and analysed with samples.
With each commission we use traditional Japanese and European jointing methods for our structures. The process of deciding the joint of choice and placement is unique within each design.
Our timber structures offer a variety of uses from porches, garden structures, extensions and new build homes. Each commission is unique and requires a design process in collaboration with the client in order to achieve the desired result.
Conservation
John Earl-
“Conservation is largely the art of controlling change”
Our expertise and knowledge of historic timber buildings in the UK allow us to offer a full package in the conservation of historic timber structures.
In most cases we begin with a survey of the structure to identify the significance and the areas of attention, this allows us to devise an appropriate conservation strategy and highlight the interventions necessary with respect to the structures significance, and regard to conservation philosophies.
We are able to advise clients in regards to Listed Building Consent and carry out the process acting as an agent. We do this by gaining an understanding of the structure, defining the significance of the structure, identifying the interventions necessary to produce policies to maintain and enhance the significance. This leads to an appraisal of the conservation options to maintain significance, we can then produce recordings of the existing structure, any historic conservation work, and the proposals for intervention, which are then justified in order to monitor significance. All of this is required to demonstrate why or why not you can change a structure or object.
When Listed Building Consent is achieved we are able to carry out the interventions necessary along with organising competent conservation specialists for associated materials such as lime, bricks and stone.
At the completion of successful conservation we will always advise clients on conservation management strategies and set out a plan to ensure the structure continues to be enjoyed as a heritage asset.
